Dan Crawford is a killer of Kings. The Sacramento Kings, that is.
Last night’s Kings-Spurs game was a close one. In fact, it was so close that Michael Finley had to hit a last second 3 pointer to give the Spurs the win. But the question is – did he hit it?
Watching the game and the replay’s, it was pretty clear that Finley still had the ball in his possession as the shot clock expired. Kings coach Kenny Natt was livid and was even more upset when Crawford explained to him that shot clock violations were NOT reviewable.
I can understand making shot clock violations not reviewable. However, the use of instant replay was specifically instituted to be able to take a look at end-of-game situations like this, where the outcome hinges on getting the call correct. If Crawford doesn’t have the ability to make judgement calls at the end of the game on what should and should not be reviewable, then the league needs to make some sort of exception on the use of instant replay in the last minute of the game, regardless of any other rules that may exist.
That being said, lets not diminish the fact that Dan Crawford, John Goble, and Bennie Adams all missed the fact that the shot clock had clearly expired before the ball left Finley’s possession.
